2:1 – Christ solved the sin problem for good
2:6 – Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived
2:9-11 – Anyone who hates is still in the dark. The person who loves dwells in God’s light, and doesn’t block the light from others.
2:15-17 – Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world – wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important – has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from Him.
3:11 – For this is the original message we heard: We should love each other.
3:14-15 – The way we know we’ve been transferred from death to life is that we love each other. Anyone who doesn’t love is as good as dead.
3:16-17 – Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see someone in need and have the means to do something about it, but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God’s love? It disappears and you made it disappear.
3:18-20 – My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love. It’s the only way to know we’re truly living in God’s reality.
3:21-24 – He told us to love one another in line with the original command.
4:1 – Not everyone who talks about God comes from God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world. (see Notes on 2 Peter for more of that)
4:7-10 – Let us continue to love each other since love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God.
4:11-12 – If God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other. If we love one another, God dwells deeply within us.
4:17-18 – God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. There is no room in love for fear. A fearful life is one not yet fully formed in love.
4:20-21 – If anyone says “I love God” but hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both.
5:1-3 – The proof that we love God comes when we keep his commandments and they are not at all troublesome.
